Ever since Lila came to us at eight weeks of age I’ve had my eye on this toy duck. A nearly life-sized plush duck that quacks. Given Lila’s destructive streak, for months I restrained myself from buying one. But as her first birthday approached, I thought the time might finally be right and I placed an order.
The toy took ages to arrive, but when it did, neither Phil nor I could make it quack. We poked and prodded all its body parts, but mute it remained. It seemed we’d bought a dud duck. When I called the shop to arrange an exchange, it emerged that our duck was not a dud, but merely a delicate creature…vocalising only in response to just the right touch. Oh well. Lila’s clever. Surely she’d figure it out (even if we hadn’t). [read more below]
So on the morning of her first birthday, we presented her with the coveted duck. Wrapped in bright yellow. When we squeezed its plump belly, the harsh sound startled her. But Lila’s a brave dog as well as a clever one and promptly wrapped her jaws around its limp neck, shook it violently and, to my horror, set about plucking its fuzzy feathers. Despite all that, she did indeed manage to make it quack.

Cecil and Coco went ballistic when they heard the duck quacking.
Josie cried.
I marvelled at Lila’s lovely white teeth and shining coat.
Please forward details of duck purchase (rather the duck than my smalls!)
I’ll soothe Josie (it’s not a real duck sweetheart).
Please let me know what you feed Lila (my teeth and hair could do with it).

Lila’s duck is very attractive, but the quacker’s probably met his fate by now. I thought Labs were supposed to have soft mouths!
My Fergus had one plush toy–a bedraggled, revolting squirrel tail hanging off some kind of slimy knot. I had a start every time he dragged it into a room; it looked like a dead rat that had been fished out of the gutter.
But his towering passion is for a rubber hamburger and hot dog. Indestructible.

Sorry to have wreaked havoc in your household! The offending duck was purchased from All 4 Pets in Ivanhoe. I believe they come in three sizes. What does Lila eat? Anything. I feed her Hill’s Science Diet along with meat, chicken, fish, vegetables, fruit, rice and pasta. She supplements this with regular grabs of kangaroo poo. And horse poo when she can get it. Oh! And I give her marrow bones, but not too many because they contain a lot of fat. Great to hear from you!

Thanks! Before posting the video, I had to make the decision not to care if the whole world discovered that I’m a complete idiot.

Lila does have a soft mouth…full of very large, strong teeth! Maybe next time we’ll go for the hamburger and hot dog…
